Kalman Birkas, 82, a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, August 18, 2017 at University Amherst Health Center Emergency Room.
He was born January 19, 1935 in Papa, Hungary. Kalman immigrated to the United States in 1956, and made his home in Amherst for the last thirty-two years.
He was a Master Baker by trade for fifty-five years. Kalman owned and operated with his wife Naomi K&N Eatery in Vermilion from 1988 to 1999. He was also employed as the head baker for Fisher Foods where he prepared everything from scratch. Kalman was a member of the House of Praise in Lorain. He loved all animals which included his miniature horse and raising geese. His hobbies included gardening and flower gardening.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-two years, Naomi Birkas (nee: Messer); his daughter, Helen Wayner (Denny) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; his son, Kalman G. Birkas (Heidi) of Avon; his grandchildren, Jessica Wayner, Nathan and Nikolas Birkas; his former wife, Ilona Birkas of Avon; his one half brother and three half sisters.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gyula "Itchy" Birkas in 1979; his four brothers; one sister; and his parents.
Friends may call Thursday, August 24, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at funeral home. The Rev. Gilbert Silva, pastor of House of Praise, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
