John R. "Bob" Johnston, 91, of Avon Lake passed away Fri, August 4, 2017 at his residence at Independence Village in Avon Lake surrounded by family. 
He was born February 10, 1926 in Cleveland and had also resided in Englewood, FL; Willoughby, Ashland and Middle Bass Island, OH. 
After graduating from West Tech High School in Cleveland he served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp as a Second Lieutenant. He was stationed in the Philippines as part of an Air Recon. Unit and was discharged from active duty in 1945 and served in the reserves until 1949. He was employed in the hardware and aviation mechanics business and retired as president of John ston Aviation in Ashland. Prior to that he was employed with Westlake Metal Industries in North Ridgeville, Bobson Hardware and Johnston and Sons Hardware both in Lakewood. He was raised in the Congregational Church and had been a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ and currently attended a non-denominational service at his assisted living residence. He was also a member of the West Tech Alumni Association and volunteered for Agape Flight Missions while in Florida. One of his other passions was swimming and he had been a member of the Lorain Scuba Diving Club. Bob loved boating and fishing and hosted "world renowned" clam bakes. He also enjoyed model airplanes and was a private pilot and enjoyed flying to Canada where he also had family. Woodworking, and home remodeling were other interests. Both vocal and instrumental music were important to Bob as well, and he played the saxophone and supported the Avon Lake Band Boosters. 
Bob is survived by his second wife Mildred "Millie" (nee Cameron) of Avon Lake; two sons, John R. "Rob" Johnston Jr. (Brenda) of Avon Lake, and Christopher L. Johnston (Janet) of Plain City, OH; daughter in law Barbara P. Johnston of Avon; stepson August Stein; 11 grandchildren, Tim, David, Angela, Karen, Kathy, Renee, Luke, Mackenzie, Graham, Connor, Madelyn; 18 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; and a sister Betty Gliva. 
He was preceded in death by his first wife Ellen G. (nee Thomas); two daughters, Linda and Leslie Johnston; a son Roger Johnston; a sister Carolyn Lariviere; and his parents, John "Jack" and Winnifred "Winnie" Johnston (nee Warner).
